Is there some secret agreement between the news stations to try and make the public care about things that really, only deserve a passing mention?
What the fuck is the deal with this ridiculous outpouring of grief over George Best?
It must be a generational thing, and anyone over 40 has had their senses and faculties allowing reasoning dumbed by an overwhelming sense of nostalgia.
Does this man really deserve all these plaudits? It was bad enough when he first went into hospital. Since then there has been a continuous stream of well-wishers and news reports updating us on his condition. WHO GIVES A SHIT?!
I don't deny that he was an excellent footballer in his day (although it needs to be said that he'd be left standing in the modern game. Someone like Cristiano Ronaldo would humiliate him), but he threw it all away. Does someone like that deserve to be praised regardless? Where do we draw the line?
On the various news bulletins yesterday they had lengthy tributes and obituaries, each channel showing a collection of clips from the past.
1. The same three or four goals over and over. Yawn.
2. Pissed on Wogan. Ha ha fucking ha.
3. A series of public apologies and assurances that "It's all behind me now. To be sure."
Anyone else notice that? 25 years of "No more drinking for me! No sirree!"
And in 2005 what killed him? The drink....

A few years ago he was given a second chance at life - something few other people are granted. After pickling his previous one, he received a new liver. Perhaps it could have gone to someone who had suffered since they were a youngster with a congenital illness. Who knows? Let's give ol' Georgie the benefit of the doubt and assume that a young innocent didn't lose out for the washed up old wino.
No matter - he spurned that second chance, and carried on living like an international playboy. Which, let's remind ourselves, he wasn't.He was a fat, greasy, slurring, drain on the public services. And yet, he is still feted like a demi-god. Please - understand this. HE WASN'T.
He had talent, he wasted it. The public gave him chance after chance and he pissed it against the wall. He was given another shot at life, and he blew it. Does he deserve all this attention? Does he bollocks.
Fuck you Bestie, you were a loser and a disappointment. Rest in peace and all, but you truly do not deserve this praise and recognition.
